KARMA

What is the meaning of karma?

” Karma ” is a Sanskrit word meaning action. It means all our actions and deeds and the outcome of these deeds. Whatever you are sowing by means of these deeds you will reap the outcome accordingly. It is the cause and effect of everything that you do knowingly or unknowingly. Irrespective of your intent there will be a consequence to all your doings and you have to be ready for it. Karma is a conscious activity that will rule the destiny of your life. It is one’s intent that will define one’s Karma. Your life is your doing and you have to take responsibility for the same.

How does it work?

When we say  ‘What goes around comes Around’. Do we actually believe in it? We go about doing our activities without knowing the outcome of our actions. If we strongly believed in it we would never perform any negative actions and deeds. It is only when we start facing the effects of our accumulated ‘bad’ karma we realize our mistakes. But the act is already performed now there is no changing it. Karma never fails to produce its effect. It is a law of return. Whatever you spread will return in due course of time.

All actions you take and accumulate will show its results sometime in the future in this lifetime or the next. Your positive deeds and thoughts will give you positive effects and happiness while your intentional or unintentional negative deeds will give you negative effects. You have to be prepared to face these consequences as a result of your own doings. While you experience the effects of your past Karma, you are simultaneously building the Karma for your future.

Unless you have faced all the results of your actions you will be in a continuous cycle of life, death and rebirth.

Can you change your karma?

The simple answer is ‘no’. You cannot change your karma.

It cannot be cancelled. While performing any action you are already building your outcome. This cannot be changed. If you are conscious regarding the outcome of your actions then be conscious enough to perform good ones. Be careful in your treatment and behavior towards others. Be kind and forgiving. Karma has a funny way of coming back to you in some way or the other. It is an uncontrolled act and there is no escape. You have to take responsibility of your mistakes.

Remember the famous quote’ How people treat you is their Karma, how you react is yours’. Therefore you accumulate and collect goodness and positivity for your future and the good karma in your life will follow. This will keep you away from revenge and negativity.  A person’s karmic sum will decide the form he or she takes in the next cycle of life.

As Buddha said: “Do not overlook negative actions merely because they are small; however small a spark may be, it can burn down a haystack as big as a mountain”. Similarly he said: “Do not overlook tiny good actions, thinking they are of no benefit; even tiny drops of water in the end will fill a huge vessel”.
